Fundraising Committee Volunteer

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Fundraising Committee Member

DATE OF DESCRIPTION: January, 2006

POSITION TO START: February, 2006

CLASSIFICATION:  Year-round, part time

HOURS OF Work Varies

FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE:
ROLES, REQUIREMENTS AND PURPOSE

GOAL OF FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE MEMBERS:

1) Assist with various office and warehouse tasks.

2) Develop list of donors.

3) Generate a funding stream that is driven by some very large gifts, grants, and contracts to create and maintain financial solvency. Identify donors at these levels ($ in thousands) 5, 10, 25, 50, 100.

The fundraising effort needs to be well organized, documented, reviewed and reported.


A) Members should be successful local, state and nationally recognized individuals with at least
one of the following: time, money, and/or wide-ranging contacts to support this effort.

B) Develop a list of donors (identify, contact and enlist):

1) Individuals
2) Businesses
3) Organizations:
foundations
charitable trusts
educational
governments
sustainable technologies
environmental
issue oriented

C) Types of funding sought:

1) Operating Budget
a) underwrite educational programs: Schools, GREE, Writers Workshop, Whitewater Academy, GeoWhiz, Guide classes
b) endowed position(s): grant writer, marketing director, director of development
c) scholarships for GREE and other students, participants
2) Capital Budget
a) pay down mortgage balloon payment 1/07
b) settle IRS debt
c) headquarters improvements and possible relocation
d) Professor Valley Field Camp improvements
e) equipment purchase

E) Tasks for Committee Members:

1) Develop strategies for success
2) Develop a donor package that is focused on the strengths of CFI
a) use current color brochure, or,
b) create a new brochure specifically addressing potential donors.
c) a letter from director
d) testimonials from participants, students, teachers
e) images of participants (students, teachers, staff, donors {The Plateau Society donors})
e) donor card {a printed card and envelope to accompany any mailing, asking for donations and explaining how - online, mail in}
g) develop a "Wish List" {equipment we would like to have}
3) E-Newsletter quarterly: {could be done by committee volunteer in consultation with me}
4) Mailings to members, lapsed members, higher end donors: {Example 1000 piece mailing takes about
20 hours of the above, need a volunteer liaison to head this up}
5) Research on current database {for accuracy}
6) Local database work: new residents names, addresses, higher end neighborhoods
7) Need volunteer labor to write, print, fold, stuff, stamp mailings
8) Host donor cultivation events at PVFC and Westwater river trip:
{coordination, sponsorship (how we pay for it) invitations etc. all done by volunteers on this committee. CFI professional guides, commissary to provide standard services but these need to be underwritten by some method. Need 6 month lead time to start on planning prior to event}
9) Track efforts/contacts by members
10) Track success/failure of contacts
11) Follow up ALL contacts (Chair or Karla), to enlist ideas of contacted persons
a) frank/direct questions regarding success or failure
b) what would contact recommend
c) who or what organizations, businesses would contact recommend

12) Figure out what works and use those strategies
13) Write articles about CFI (& our fundraising efforts, especially successes)

F) Additional Duties for Chair

1) Monthly reports to Board
2) Estimate amount of time expected of each committee member to contribute per task per month, adjust project scope and timetable as necessary To Top of Page
