Desert Writers is held at various locations on the Colorado Plateau.

The Desert Writers Workshop focuses on inspirational and creative writing about the natural world. The principles and techniques studied also apply to writing about any topic of interest. CFI encourages writers, as important record-keepers and influencers of civilization, to become more active and skillful in promoting an ethic of responsible stewardship of our natural resources and cultural treasures.

Desert Writers Workshop features two well-known authors that are also proven, popular teachers. We rotate genres and feature either non-fiction, fiction or poetry sections.

Participants work in small groups (each faculty section limited to 10 for a total of 20 maximum participants), enjoy free time to write, read as well as learn about the area through short field trips to natural and cultural sites.

A private consultation is scheduled with your  faculty member. The workshop also includes faculty and participant readings, special topic discussions, optional nature hikes, and some shared meals.

"I attended the Desert Writers (as) a journalist in search of inspiration and encouragement to break out into more personalized nonfiction. I am happy to tell you that a collection of essays I began with Ellen (Meloy) is forthcoming from the University of Nevada Press and I've published in Orion and Northern Lights, plus my work has been anthologized in American Nature Writing 2002 and 2003."

...Penelope Grenoble O'Malley,
Agoura, CA

PAST FACULTY have included:
Gary Paul Nabhan, Terry Tempest Williams, David Lee, Ellen Meloy, Robert Pyle, Scott Russell Sanders, Alison Hawthorne Deming, Christopher Merrill,  Mary Sojourner, Roy Parvin, Russell Martin, Louis Owens, Linda Hogan, Pam Houston, William Stafford,  Ann Haymond Zwinger and others.

"Desert Writers far exceeded my expectations. I was expecting a rather relaxing and easy going traditional workshop; instead I was challenged and pushed into working much harder than I expected."
