Enjoy hiking in the Lizard Head Wilderness Area in the gorgeous San Juan Mountains in Southwestern Colorado, without the added weight of carrying your own gear. We immerse ourselves and get to know this country which is the headwaters of the Dolores River! Four nights/five days hiking includes uphill and some rocky terrain, moving camp twice. A unique opportunity to experience the beautiful Colorado Rockies, camping and hiking at 10,000 -11,000 feet elevation.
Our trip starts with a 7 p.m. orientation and motel stay at the Dolores Mountain Inn in Dolores, Colorado. CFI provides transportation to the Kilpacker Trailhead the next day for our 4 night, 5 day hike. We return to Dolores by 5 p.m. the last day.
The trip is comfortably paced and allows time for hikers to adjust to the altitude. We cover three miles the first day, starting at 10,000 feet elevation which is great way to get to the high country. Mid-trip, we move camp up and over a pass, entailing a 6 mile hiking day up to 11,000 feet and over a pass. From our layover camps, we take a leisurely day hikes of optional lengths. The last day we return, and exit out to the Navajo Lake trailhead.
We feature delicious meals and involve participants in camp life; try your hand at dutch oven cookery! Outfitting packing and permits by Redwood Llamas.

Join our naturalists in using the San Juan Mountains as an outdoor classroom in which we will discuss issues of the Dolores River watershed and wilderness management. We will cover geological processes that formed El Diente, Wilson Peak and Mt. Wilson as we hike adjacent to these famous "fourteeners" of the San Juan Mountains range. We discuss mining boom and busts in the region and share fascinating stories of Ute Indian history and Butch Cassidy outlaw tales. You will also have abundant opportunities to learn about mountain plant and animal adaptations and identification. Our group is kept small for hiking enjoyment, sharing information and socializing.
Minimum group size is 6; maximum is 12. Please inquire about smaller groups.
