IV. CLIMATE:
Our regional elevation on the Colorado Plateau is about 4-5,000 feet with trips to the high mesas or our “island mountains” taking you to elevations of 6-11,000 feet. We have a high desert climate with great seasonal variation. For spring and fall, expect sunny skies and pleasant day temperatures in the 60’s to 80’s, rain or snow are possible. Summer brings warm, dry temperatures, usually 90-100 degrees. Night temperatures are usually 20-40 degrees cooler. Surprise storms can come up anytime! Please bring items on the suggested gear list no matter what season (“Do I have to bring the long underwear and rain gear for my river trip in June?” The answer is YES).
V. SMOKING, ELECTRONIC DEVICES, CELL PHONES, AND PETS:
CFI operates facilities and trips as smoke free environments in all buildings, boats, vehicles and common areas in campsites. No pets are allowed on our programs. You may wish to contact local Chamber of Commerce or lodging establishments about pet boarding options. On CFI camping trips, we provide the chance to be “unplugged” from society, to experience the wilderness on its own terms and to encourage enjoyment of natural sounds and quiet. We request NO electronic devices such as radios, CD players, cell phones etc. The exception to this is photographic and video equipment.
VI. GRATUITIES:
For our adult and family trips guide gratuities are customary and always appreciated. The typical range is $10-$25 per person/day for multi-day trips.
VII. SCHOLARSHIPS:
The EDUCATOR scholarship (1/2 program fee) is for those who teach, lead and guide others. It is available for adult/family trips, and guide workshops. The JOY Scholarship is available for women pursuing outdoor education and guiding careers. A Joy scholarship is offered for the Graduate Residency ($500), for River Rescue (1/2 program fee) and for Whitewater Academy for teens (1/2 program fee). Please see Scholarships Web page or call to request a Scholarship Information and Application Form.
VIII. PARTICIPANT RESPONSIBILITIES AND ASSUMPTION OF RISKS:
A CFI staff person with Emergency Medical and CPR certifications accompanies each trip. However, through your registration and participation in any activity sponsored by Canyonlands Field Institute, you acknowledge that there are associated risks and dangers. Please note that CFI by choice does not carry cell phones or radios on backcountry trips and your choice to participate in this trip implies acceptance of those terms.
Please carefully read, complete accurately and sign your registration form.
Please carefully read and sign the Acknowledgment and Assumption of Risks & Release and Indemnity Agreement with the Inherent and Other Risks List.
Registration forms that are incomplete or unsigned are not valid.
You acknowledge that there is always an element of the “unknown” on any outdoor adventure and that not all variables are under the control of the guides/instructors. Acknowledging these risks, you assume these risks for yourself and any loss or damage to property that may occur on a CFI program. You are responsible financially for any costs incurred in an emergency evacuation/rescue and transport including helicopter evacuation.
As a participant, you are responsible for bringing the appropriate gear and clothing. You are responsible for your physical condition. If any aspect of the program, including safety, logistics, skill and gear required, is not clear to you, it is your responsibility to contact CFI immediately and ask questions. The safety and enjoyment of the entire group depends on you fulfilling these responsibilities.
BY YOUR REGISTRATION, YOU AGREE TO ALL THE TERMS DESCRIBED.
