Welcome to Moab, Utah, Canyonlands Field Institute's base of operations. We love it here! The information on our Moab pages applies to all school group and adult programs; anyone passing through Moab on a CFI trip, or just visiting this incredible area. We are far from major cities and getting here will be part of the adventure. Our listing is not all inclusive, but should help you get started with travel plans, optional accommodations and activities. Professor Valley Field Camp and CFI’s La Sal Mountain Base Camp are located in a beautiful part of the Colorado plateau 20 miles east of Moab, Utah. The Colorado River passes just north and west of Moab. Arches and Canyonlands National Parks are a few miles from downtown. Canyon hiking, pictograph sites, world class mountain bike and jeep trails, and even dinosaur tracks are easily accessible in and around Moab. If you are not driving in your own vehicle, or are with a large group, check below for Travel Recommendations on how to get here; and Coach Rental and Charters on how to get around once you arrive; or, use the services of a local Travel agent.

Your best option may be driving from home by school bus, rented vans, or charter motor coach.

Fly to a City in our Region and Rent or Charter a Vehicle.
Chartered motor coaches or buses may be able to drop and pick-up participants at the Field Camps or river trip boat ramps.

NEW! CFI now is offering these two TRAVEL PACKAGES based out of Salt Lake City for School Groups in cooperation with Blackhawk Transportation (school bus) and area lodging. You would add the price of the selected package below to your CFI program fee. Fees below are based on 20 student minimums. Please inquire if you are interested in a custom fee quotes for smaller groups or for Grand Junction, CO (airport or train).

I. From Salt Lake City - add to our 4 night Professor Valley Field Camp program.

$215/student

Arrive to Salt Lake City airport by 11:00 am Monday. School bus transport to Moab (rest/food stop en route in Price, UT). Arrive Professor Valley Field Camp 4:00 PM.

Departure 10:30 am Friday from Professor Valley Field Camp with sack lunch by CFI; school bus transport to Moab for short souvenir shopping then onto Arches National Park (park entry arranged.)

Departure 3:30 PM from Arches National Park, to Salt Lake City (in same school bus), rest/food stop in Price, arrive Salt Lake City 9:00 PM, Airport motel lodging included.

Saturday early morning motel airport shuttle for scheduled flights, motel light breakfast included. Allow 2 hours for check-in, security.

Fee for package includes all bus arrangements , driver services and lodging; one night motel lodging/breakfast (2-4 per room) for Friday night park entry arrangement. Your lunch driving down and dinner driving back to Salt Lake are on your own.

II. From Salt Lake City - add to any multi-day RIVER TRIP, Colorado or Green River. Note that day of week will vary depending on river trip launch dates assigned.

$250/student

Arrive to Salt Lake City airport by 2:00 PM Day1: School bus transport to Green River or Moab (rest/food stop en route in Price, UT) Arrive Moab downtown campground with tipis/showers or to a hostel, 7:00 PM.

Day 2: Departure 9:00 am Moab in school bus to launch site.

Days on river.

Last day of river trip: pickup at takeout site by school bus, 2:00 PM/ transport to Moab and stay at a downtown campground with tipis/showers or at a hostel edge of town. Dinner (hey-what about pizza!); breakfast on own, souvenir shopping.

Next day: School bus transport to hike in Arches National Park (park entry arranged). Lunch on own.

Leave 3:30 PM from Arches National Park, to Salt Lake City (in same school bus), rest/food stop in Price , arrive Salt Lake City 9:00 PM, Airport motel lodging included.

Departure day: Early morning motel airport shuttle for scheduled flights, motel light breakfast included.

Fee for package includes all bus arrangements , driver services and lodging; two night stays at either downtown Moab campground with tipis/showers or at a hostel on edge of town, park entry arrangement. Salt Lake City motel lodging/breakfast (2-4 per room) for last night prior to departing flights. Your lunch driving down, meals in Moab and dinner driving back to Salt Lake are on your own.

Staying at the downtown campground or hostel depends on your group's plans for sleeping gear, meals on own, desire for access to shopping (hostel is not walking distance to stores, no shuttle service in Moab).

II. From Salt Lake City - ADD to our 5 NIGHT COMBINATION PROGRAM (3 NIGHT FIELD CAMP/ 2 NIGHTS RIVER)7 nights total, Mon-Mon

$225/student

Arrive to Salt Lake City airport by 11:00 am Monday. School bus transport to Professor Valley Field Camp (rest/food stop en route in Price, UT).

Tues-Wed: At Camp, field study hikes.

Thursday: School bus transport to river trip launch site, at Cisco, Colorado River.

Friday: On the river.

Saturday: Pickup at takeout site on Colorado River in Professor Valley by school bus, 2:00 PM/ transport to Moab and stay at a downtown campground with tipis/showers or at a hostel edge of town. Possible souvenir shopping.

Sunday: Bus picks up group after breakfast for tour & hike in Arches National Park (park entry arranged; bring your own picnic/trail dinner). Leave Arches 3:30 PM by school bus transport to Salt Lake City arrive 9:00 PM with en route rest/food stop in Price. Airport motel lodging included.

Departure day: Early morning motel airport shuttle for scheduled flights, motel light breakfast included.

Fee for package includes all bus arrangements , driver services/lodging round trip from Salt Lake City to Professor Valley Field Camp/to Colorado River/ from River to Moab/to Arches National Park and return to Salt Lake; one night stay at either downtown Moab campground with tipis/showers or at a hostel on edge of town, park entry arrangement. Salt Lake City motel lodging/breakfast (2-4 per room) for last night prior to departing flights. Your lunch driving down, meals in Moab and dinner driving back to Salt Lake are on your own.

Fly to Salt Lake City and Rent or Charter a Vehicle:
Salt Lake City Airport is a major transportation hub, served by major airlines, rental agencies and shuttles to motels and the city.

Miles One-way: SLC to Moab 235, Moab to PVFC or La Sal Mtn. base camp 20. Plan at least 5 hours travel time from SLC to Moab, Professor Valley or the La Sal Mountains, the last several miles to both camps are on graded gravel roads.

Fly to Denver or Grand Junction, CO and Rent or Charter a Vehicle:
Denver International Airport is 6 hours east of Moab, it is a major transportation hub with major airlines, all car rental agencies and shuttles to motels and the city. Grand Junction, CO is 2 hours east of Moab. Walker Field in Grand Junction is served by several major airline connections, many car rental agencies and motel shuttles.

Amtrak Train to Grand Junction and Rent or Charter a Vehicle:
If you choose to take Amtrak plan to arrive the day before your program and expect delays. The Hampton Inn is a good hotel near the train station; call (800) 922-3883.
