River Skills An Introduction to Whitewater Rafting
This course is designed as an overall introduction for the aspiring beginning guide or novice private boater. Trip includes an outfitted trip on the Fisher Towers section and Westwater Canyon on the Colorado River, all meals starting with lunch Saturday through lunch on Monday, river use fees, shuttle and intensive instruction on the many aspects of boating. Youth over 12 welcome. Starts and ends in Moab, Utah.
Join our experienced team as they share basic river reading and running skills on the Colorado River. During the weekend we will explore river dynamics, ecology, rowing and paddle skills, equipment use and rigging, basic river safety, proper minimum impact camping and kitchen practices for western rivers and get some first hand experience piloting oar boats and paddle rafts.
We will be learning on the Colorado River, starting with a day on the Fisher Towers section (“Moab Daily”) of the Colorado River to cover river dynamics and boat handling skills. The evening of the first day we will travel to the Westwater Ranger Station and camp overnight before launching on the Westwater portion of the course. Westwater canyon offers class I-III rapids and is an excellent progression after a day rafting the Class II Fisher Towers section. Water temperatures in August do not tend to require cold weather gear, but we highly recommend coming prepared for all conditions.
